Director of Music

First Congregational United Church of Christ is seeking a Director of Music to manage and grow its music program.

Responsibilities

Design and develop a music program for First Congregational United Church of Christ. As appropriate, recruit volunteers for solos and ensembles (choir, youth choir, etc.). Provide or coordinate direction and accompaniment for musicians during performance and rehearsals.

Working with the Pastor and the Worship and Fellowship Leadership Team, coordinate music for all worship services, including regular Sunday services and holiday services (Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, etc.). Provide or coordinate leadership and accompaniment for congregational singing. Suggest preludes, postludes, hymns, etc.

Be first call for weddings, funerals, and other special events. Work with pastor and families to coordinate music for those events.

Oversee the care and maintenance of all church instruments.

Review, select, and purchase music for worship. Manage the church’s CCLI and OneLicense licenses.

Requirements

Proficiency in one or more accompanying instruments (organ, piano, guitar, etc.).

Experience and understanding of a wide range of worship music (classical music, hymnody, contemporary worship music, etc.).

Ability to respond to the desires of the congregation while expanding the horizons of the church’s musical life.

Hours and Compensation

This position will begin with an expectation of five hours a week, including planning time, rehearsal and practice time, meetings, and Sunday morning worship. Additional hours will be required for special worship services, weddings, funerals, etc. We anticipate that hours will increase as the music program at First Congregational United Church of Christ grows.

Compensation is commensurate with experience.

Accountability

This position reports to the Pastor and the Executive Committee. The Director of Music will coordinate regularly with the Pastor and the Worship and Fellowship Leadership Team. Issues, resources needs, and questions will be escalated through the Pastor and/or Executive Committee.

The Director of Music will meet regularly with the Executive Committee to set expectations and goals, evaluate performance, assess avenues for improvements, etc.
