Advent

Advent is the time of year leading up to God to come into the world as one of us in the person of Jesus Christ. It is a time of preparation and anticipation, building week after week until we celebrate on Christmas Eve. After almost two years of pandemic precautions, this Advent is especially anticipatory and especially hopeful. We hope that you will join us for the many things that we’re offering during this Advent season.

Sunday Worship

Sunday worship during Advent includes all of our normal celebrations, plus the lighting of candles symbolizing hope, peace, joy, and love.

Join us at 9:30 on Sunday mornings as we prepare ourselves for Christ to bring these gifts, and more, into the world.

Hanging the Greens

Christmas isn’t Christmas without the decorations, and we love to decorate our Sanctuary, Narthex, and Fellowship Hall for the holiday season!

Join us after worship on November 28 to be part of our Christmas decorating festivities!

Advent Study

This year, we’re presenting an Advent devotional study from our friends at Illustrated Ministry. God With Us: An Illustrated Devotional is a unique intergenerational resource that includes five weekly devotions for all ages, as well as illustrations that are meant to be colored in and many opportunities to doodle and engage with the content in meaningful and creative ways.

Here’s the description from Illustrated Ministry:

The stories of Advent are stories for hard times. Jesus was born amid upheaval and historical change and among people who seemed powerless. But when the world feels hopeless, Advent reminds us God is with us. This Advent resource invites you to explore the ways in which Emmanuel, God-with-us, brings us hope, peace, joy, and love, especially during hard times. Use this Advent guide to center your thoughts on the ever-present hope that sees us through change and challenge. Each week you will explore how the good news of God-with-us changes our perspective and gives us courage for each day. We rejoice in Jesus’ birth because God is with us!

You can join us for our Advent study on Mondays at 6pm, starting on November 29.

Family Advent Devotional

We understand that not every family is up for a devotional at church. Sometimes, families want to experience Advent as a family. For those families, we have an at-home family devotional from our friends at Illustrated Ministry. An Illustrated Advent for Families: God With Us is an opportunity for families to take time each week during the Advent season to be intentional and focus on their faith.

Here’s the description from Illustrated Ministry:

This Advent resource invites your family to explore the ways in which Emmanuel, God-with-us, brings hope, peace, joy, and love to your home and community, especially during hard times. Use this Advent guide to center your thoughts on the ever-present hope that sees us through change and challenge. Each week you will explore how the good news of God-with-us changes our perspective and gives us courage for each day. We rejoice in Jesus’ birth because God is with us!

For copyright reasons, we can’t share this resource with everyone. But, if your family is a member or close friend of First Congregational United Church of Christ, please contact Pastor Chris for a copy!

Hometown Christmas

First Congregational United Church of Christ will be part of DeWitt’s Hometown Christmas celebration on December 4th.

Blue Christmas

Christmas is not a cheerful time for everyone. For some people, Christmas is a time of deep sadness. This is especially true for people who have lost a loved one in the past year, but is true for others as well. For those folks (and for anyone else who needs it) we offer a Blue Christmas service each year. This quiet, contemplative, and comforting service is an opportunity for people to process the negative feelings that they might be holding in during the holiday season.

Join us for our Blue Christmas service at 6pm on December 21.
